Website tally hits one billion: stats page

If Tim Berners-Lee is the father of the World Wide Web, he's just had his billionth child.

That's how many websites are now in existence, according to online tracker Internet Live Stats - and the number is growing fast.

Mr Berners-Lee touted the milestone in a Twitter post on Wednesday morning.

The 59-year-old was a young computer scientist working at the CERN lab in Switzerland when he outlined his vision in a 1989 paper.

The 25th anniversary of that event was celebrated in April.

The idea for a way of easily accessing files on linked computers sparked a phenomenon that has radically changed the world.
