Winter is over and spring has arrived with significant rain falling across the country.

Australia's south-west and south-east had significant rain, with heavy falls also recorded on the New South Wales central coast.

Ahead of tomorrow night's opening AFL finals clash between Essendon and the West Coast Eagles, Perth was hit with more than 50mms of rain over the past seven days, with some regions south of the city recording more than 120mms.

Victoria's central districts had more than 30mms, while the west coast of Tasmania was drenched with over 85mms.

Coastal NSW, including Sydney, had the highest rainfall since May. More than 150mms fell in the Hunter district with a national high of 216mms recorded in Swansea, which lies between Newcastle and Gosford.

Temperatures are set to soar over the next few days with temperatures into the mid-30s in northern parts of the country.
