Sudden storm lashes Sydney's south-west

A sudden storm has swept across Sydney bringing heavy rain, wind and even lightning.

The storm tore through the city's southwest about 4pm today with the whole of Sydney experiencing the temperature drop and unexpected rainfall.

Homes were damaged and trees were brought down during the rapid storm.

A woman was injured on Hale Place, Fairfield, and was treated by paramedics.

Trees were brought down by the rain and wind while one particular tree in Roselands was hit by lightning.

More than 12 millimetres of rain has fallen in the city's south-west since 9am.

Temperatures plunged quickly in Sydney from a sweltering 30C day down to 25C in just an hour.

The storm came on quickly after Weatherzone reported earlier today the nation was almost clear of rain.

"You wouldn't have seen an almost total lack of green rain blobs on the Weatherzone national rain radar too often in this La Niña summer," Weatherzone said.

"But right now, the whole continent is almost clear."

Weatherzone said the only minor areas of rain are scattered across outback Western Australia and some light patches in central Victoria.

Most of the country experienced warm and sunny temperatures today.

Sydney and the NSW coast can expect a return of showers and possible storms this weekend.
