Queensland hit with giant hailstones and two tornadoes

Parts of Queensland have been hit with giant hailstones this afternoon, with reports of two tornadoes hitting Pittsworth, south of Toowoomba and Bracewell, near Gladstone.

The state was hit by a torrent of wild weather, with dramatic footage showing golf ball-sized hailstones and houses blanketed in what looked like snow, as the Bureau of Meteorology tracked the icy storms.

While the potential tornadoes absconded quickly, leaving no damage to neighbouring towns, homes in the Darling Downs, the Highfields north of Toowoomba and other parts of southern Queensland weathered the storm.

The Bureau of Meterology (BoM) warned Queenslanders this morning to brace for damaging winds, heavy rainfall and large hailstones.

The severe weather warning applied to areas along the coast south of Rockhampton, including Gladstone, and further inland near the Granite Belt and Darling Downs region.

"Golf ball-sized" hail was reported at Mt Larcom this morning.

"A warm and humid airmass residing over southeastern districts together with strong winds aloft associated with an upper trough are generating severe thunderstorms this morning and into this afternoon," the Bureau said.

"In the Capricornia and northern Wide Bay districts, severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging, locally destructive winds, large, possibly giant hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours."

A fire warning was also issued for the Central Highlands and Coalfields District today.

The BoM said "above-average temperatures, dry air, and fresh west to southwesterly winds" had created a "very high fire danger" for the central and northern districts.

"Most of the east will see that unsettled weather developing tomorrow, so get out and enjoy the sun if you can," the BoM said.
