Wind warnings, rain and storms across the country

It's forecast to be a bit of a wet day across most of the country today, as a broad trough triggers showers and storms in parts of WA, SA, NSW and Victoria.

Further south, a cold front is bringing rain, strong winds and snow to parts of Tasmania.

A trough over the Top End is triggering thundery showers, while onshore winds are bringing isolated showers to eastern Queensland.

Meanwhile, our planet just had its warmest September on record, according to a new report released by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Last month's global land and ocean surface temperature was 0.97C above the 20th-century average, making it the highest of the last 141 Septembers in this dataset. The previous record was 0.95C above average, which occurred in both 2015 and 2016.

Amid last month's global warmth, it's no surprise that Australia registered its second-highest national mean land surface temperature on record for September — coming in at a whopping 2.55C above the 1961-1990 average.

The report also states that Earth's 10 warmest Septembers have all occurred since 2005 and the seven warmest have been in the last seven years.

Queensland

Brisbane will be sunny today, with a low of 15C and top of 29C.

NSW & THE ACT

Mostly sunny, cool-to-mild in the northeast. Showers, cool-to-cold in the southeast. Showers, mild-to-warm in the southwest. Mostly sunny, very warm in NW.

Sydney has a possible shower on the way, with a low of 17C and top of 22C.

Canberra has showers today, with a low of 11C and top of 17C.

There's a strong wind warning for Sydney Closed Waters, Hunter Coast, Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast.

Victoria

Mostly sunny, cool-to-cold in the southwest. Mostly cloudy, cool-to-cold in the southeast. Isolated showers, cool-to-mild in the north.

Melbourne has a late shower on the way, with a low of 10C and top of 20C.

There's a strong wind warning for Port Phillip, Gippsland Lakes, West Coast, Central Coast, Central Gippsland Coast and East Gippsland Coast.

Tasmania

Mostly cloudy, cool in the southwest. Mostly sunny, cool in the southeast. Mostly sunny, cool-to-cold in the northwest. Mostly cloudy, cold in the northeast.

Hobart will be mostly sunny, with a low of 5C and a top of 14C.

There's a strong wind warning for the Far North West Coast, Banks Strait and Franklin Sound, East of Flinders Island, Upper East Coast, Lower East Coast and South East Coast.

South Australia

Showers, mild in the southeast. Showers increasing, warm in central. Clearing shower, cool-to-mild in the west. Late shower, mild-to-warm in north.

Adelaide has showers today, with a low of 13C and a top of 23C.

There's a strong wind warning for Adelaide Metropolitan Waters, Lower West Coast, Central Coast, South Central Coast, Gulf St Vincent and Investigator Strait.

Western Australia

Mostly sunny, cool-to-mild in the southwest. Mostly cloudy, cool-to-cold in the south. Sunny, warm in the northwest. Mostly sunny, very warm in the northeast.

Perth will be mostly sunny, with a low of 12C and a top of 26C.

There's a strong wind warning for Perth Local Waters, Ningaloo Coast, Gascoyne Coast, Geraldton Coast, Lancelin Coast and Perth Coast.

Northern Territory

Late shower, very warm in the NW Top End. Mostly sunny, very warm in Arnhem. Mostly sunny, very warm-to-hot over the interior and south.

Darwin has a possible thunderstorm, with a low of 25C and a top of 32C.
