Queensland bracing for severe weather over summer with more cyclones and flooding likely

Parts of south east Queensland are bracing for damaging winds, heavy rainfall and hail as the state is being warned of a severe weather season over summer.

The Bureau of Meteorology says La Niña is to blame, with increased flooding and tropical cyclones forecast.

Queenslanders are also in for lower maximum temperatures but could see warmer nights.

Across the country today, a trough is stretching from western Western Australia, through the Northern Territory and southern Queensland to New South Wales generating showers and storms.

With increased heat and wind later in the week, however, building in WA and moving southeast, fire danger is expected to rise.

A trough is causing showers and storms in northeast Tasmania.

Low pressure over the northwest tropics is causing thundery showers.

High pressure is building over South Australia and Victoria.

Queensland

Late thunder, warm-to-very warm in the southeast. Sunny, very warm in the northeast. Mostly sunny, hot in the west.

Brisbane has a possible thunderstorm later, with a low of 21C and a top of 31C.

There's a strong wind warning for Moreton Bay and Gold Coast Waters.

New South Wales and the ACT

Showers easing, cool-to-mild in the northeast. Mostly sunny, cool-to-mild in the southeast. Mostly sunny, mild-to-warm in the west.

Sydney will be mostly sunny, with a low of 17C and a top of 23C.

There's a strong wind warning for Byron Coast, Coffs Coast, Macquarie Coast, Hunter Coast, Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast.

Canberra will also be mostly sunny, with a low of 11C and a top of 23C.

Victoria

Clearing shower, cool-to-mild in the southwest. Mostly sunny, cool-to-mild in the southeast. Mostly sunny, warm in the north.

Melbourne will be mostly sunny, with a low of 13C and a top of 20C.

Tasmania

Showers, mild in the southwest. Mostly cloudy, mild in the southeast. Mostly sunny, cool-to-mild in the northwest. Late shower, cool in the northeast.

Hobart will be cloudy, with a low of 12C and a top of 21C.

There's a strong wind warning for the South West Coast.

South Australia

Mostly sunny, cool-to-mild in the southeast and central. Mostly sunny, mild-to-warm in the west and north.

Adelaide will be sunny, with a low of 12C and a top of 25C.

Western Australia

Sunny, warm-to-very warm in the southwest and south. Mostly sunny, hot in the north.

Perth will be sunny, with a low of 18C and a top of 33C.

There's a strong wind warning for Perth Local Waters, Gascoyne Coast, Geraldton Coast, Lancelin Coast, Perth Coast, Bunbury Geographe Coast, Leeuwin Coast, Albany Coast and Esperance Coast.

Northern Territory

Late shower, very warm in the NW Top End. Mostly sunny, very warm in Arnhem. Clearing shower, hot over the interior. Mostly sunny, very warm-to-hot in the south.

Darwin has a possible thunderstorm later, with a low of 27C and a top of 34C.
