Weather forecast Australia: Strong winds on the NSW coast, and the wettest July in almost a decade

Sunshine will return for much of the country today, with a few clouds around in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne.

Early fog is likely in Canberra and Adelaide, but it won't last long.

A deepening low in the Tasman is directing a sizeable swell towards the NSW coast today.

Further south, a weak trough is only bringing the odd shower to Tasmania, southeast SA, and southwest Victoria.

A high is keeping elsewhere generally dry, whilst sending warm and gusty winds across northern Australia.

July 2020 is likely to be Sydney's wettest July since 2011, with 183mm (189 per cent of the long-term average) registered in the rain gauge and no further significant rainfall expected for the remainder of the month.

On the other side of the country, Perth is on track to have its driest July in 8 years, with only 84mm (or 58 per cent of the long term average) recorded so far this month. Rainfall amounting to a few mm is possible before the month is out, but it is unlikely to be enough to change this statistic.

New South Wales and ACT

Mostly sunny, cool-to-cold in the east. Mostly sunny, cool-to-cold in the southwest. Sunny, cool-to-cold in the northwest.

Sydney will be mostly sunny, with a low of 10 and top of 18.

After early fog and a low of 1, Canberra will be sunny, with a top of 15.

There are strong wind warnings through midnight tonight for the Byron, Coffs, Macquarie, Hunter, Sydney, Illawarra, Batemans and Eden coasts.

Victoria

Mostly sunny, cold in the south. Fog then becoming sunny, cool-to-cold in the north.

Melbourne will be mostly sunny, with a low of 8 and top of 14.

There's a strong wind warning through midnight tonight for the East Gippsland Coast.

Tasmania

Clearing showers, cold in the southwest. Mostly sunny, cold in the southeast. Mostly sunny, cool-to-cold in the north.

Hobart will be mostly sunny, with a low of 5 and top of 13.

There's a strong wind warning through midnight tonight for the Lower East, South East and South West coasts.

South Australia

Fog then becoming sunny, cool-to-cold in the southeast and central. Fog then becoming sunny, cool-to-mild in the west. Mostly sunny, cool-to-cold in the north.

Adelaide will be sunny with a top of 16 after early fog, with a low of 7.

There's a road weather alert for reduced visibility in fog in Adelaide, where road conditions will be dangerous this morning.

The SA Police advises that people should:

• Turn on your headlights.

Queensland

Mostly sunny, cool-to-mild in the east. Sunny, cool-to-mild in the west.

Brisbane will be mostly sunny, with a low of 12 and top of 24.

There's a strong wind warning through midnight tonight for Fraser Island Coast, Sunshine Coast Waters and Gold Coast Waters, and tomorrow, for the Peninsula, Cooktown, Capricornia and Fraser Island coasts, Sunshine Coast Waters and Gold Coast Waters.

Northern Territory

Sunny, warm in the NW Top End. Mostly sunny, mild-to-warm in Arnhem. Sunny, cool-to-mild over the interior and south.

Darwin will be sunny, with a low of 16 and top of 32.

There's a strong wind warning through midnight tonight for the Arafura Coast.

Western Australia

Cloud increasing, cool-to-mild in the southwest. Sunny, cool-to-mild in the south. Sunny, very warm in the north.

Perth will be mostly sunny, with a low of 7 and top of 20.

There's a strong wind warning through midnight tonight for the North Kimberley Coast.
