Spring snow for NSW as severe storm warning is issued

New South Wales ski fields have received a late dusting of spring snow after days of wild weather battered the state.

Perisher received five centimetres of snow, icing ski fields with white.

The smattering of snow comes after days of wild weather; a tornado hit Armidale in central NSW, and "fast moving storms" brought heavy rain and large hail stones to parts of the state.

While conditions are easing, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has issued a severe storm warning for people in Illawarra.

Parts of Hunter, Metropolitan Sydney, South Coast, Central Tablelands and Southern Tablelands Forecast Districts have also been warned to brace for high winds.

Damaging winds, averaging around 50 to 60 km/h with gusts in excess of 90 km/h, are possible early this morning.

These are expected to ease throughout out the day.

"A complex low pressure system over southeast Australia extends several troughs which will track east across the south of the state this morning. This weather pattern will result in vigorous west to northwesterly winds," BoM said.

A severe weather warning has also been issued for east Victoria.

Potentially "damaging winds" could sweep across parts of Central, East Gippsland, North East and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts.

National forecast

Rains and storms are easing across most capitals.

Sydney will be mostly sunny with a top of 22°C, while showers ease in Melbourne. A top of 16°C is expected in the Victorian capital.

Canberra will see a shower or two with a high of 16°C.

Things are looking sunny in Brisbane, with a high of 28°C on the cards.

Cloudy conditions are forecasted for Adelaide, which will reach 17°C

Perth will be partly cloudy with a max of 25°C.

Hobart will see showers and a maximum temperature of 15°C.

Tropical Darwin will hit 35°C, with cloudy conditions.
