Weather alert for multiple states as cold front sweeps across the country

Multiple states have been warned of strong winds, cold temperatures and heavy rain as a "powerful" cold front begins to cross the southern parts of the country.

A severe weather warning has been issued for parts of Victoria, as days of rain is forecast for New South Wales and South Australia.

It comes after most of the country experienced an unusually warm start winter.

Heavy rain smashes Australia's east coast

Heavy rain will continue to lash parts of New South Wales, with the wet weather not set to end until Friday.

Totals of 50mm were recorded at Winnathee Station, a remote sheep and cattle property on the NSW/South Australian border.

Other places in far western NSW topped 20 mm, including Tibooburra, , as well as Broken Hill which had its wettest June day in 15 years.

Perth also was hit by the severe weather system, with the city experiencing record-breaking rainfall Sunday night into Monday morning.

The rainfall marked the wettest day in any month in almost five-and-a-half years.

Storms, damaging winds for Victoria

A slow moving cold front near the Victoria-South Australia border will generate thunderstorms in Victoria tomorrow, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

Heavy rainfall which could lead to flash flooding is expected to hit the Mallee, Wimmera and South West districts early tomorrow morning.

The heaviest falls are likely to be recorded around the around the Grampians.

The bureau warns thunderstorms may redevelop over western Victoria during the afternoon.

A severe weather warning for damaging wind gusts is also in place, with winds of 90 to 100 km/h likely to develop over the Grampians and central ranges tomorrow.

Rain and icy conditions to continue

Icy conditions are expected for multiple states in the coming days, as a "powerful" cold front moves across southern parts of Western Australia.

The front will bring cold air into South Australia, before it spreads to Victoria, Tasmania, and New South Wales by the end of the week, bringing cloud cover, rain, storms, and strong winds.

Weatherzone said residents of Adelaide should expect to feel three degrees cooler than what the thermometers indicate on Thursday.

A weaker cold front will arrive over next weekend, bringing another surge of cold air.

Hobart will see scattered amounts of showers tomorrow but totals are not expected to be high.

Queensland appears to miss the cold and wet weather, with sunny skies expected for the remainder of the week.
