We have a role to combat piracy: Foxtel

Foxtel concedes it has a role to play in reducing the rate of online piracy while calling for new copyright laws to be broadened.

In its submission to an inquiry into the federal government's proposed crackdown, the pay-TV provider said with some minor tweaking legislative changes could be a positive step towards combating the problem.

Legislation before parliament will allow rights-holders to seek a court injunction forcing internet service providers to block access to piracy websites hosted overseas.

Foxtel wants the provision to be extended to intermediaries, including search engines.

It would ensure the injunction power is technology neutral and able to be broadly applied, it said.

The pay-TV firm acknowledged it had a part to play in reducing the incidence of online copyright infringement.

"Foxtel has and will continue to provide ways to access content quickly, conveniently and at reasonable prices," it said.

But it also argued it's critical stronger legislation to stem online piracy is put in place.
