Watch house officers suspended for using ‘excessive force’ on boy

Two Brisbane watch house officers have been suspended over accusations they manhandled a teenager in custody.

Queensland police say the two civilian employees, aged 52 and 41, are being investigated for allegedly using excessive force on a 16-year-old detainee last month.

Sources told 9News the incident occurred when the teenager was being moved from cells in the Brisbane watch house.

It is understood the 16-year-old, who was not being combative, was strongly handled against a wall while being restrained.

Police say the boy did not suffer physical injuries or require medical treatment during the May 10 incident.

Officers began an investigation when it was reported at a later date and after reviewing CCTV footage.

The officers’ suspensions come after the Queensland Government launched a review into the youth custody system last month.

The move was triggered by revelations children as young as 10 were being held for up to a month in adult watch houses.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk also announced a new Department of Youth Justice will be created and led by one of Queensland's most senior police officers.
