Sailors from Australian warship HMAS Melbourne have made another major drug bust, seizing 216 kilograms of heroin worth an estimated $64 million from a smuggling vessel off east Africa.

This takes the Australian navy's narcotics haul to more than five tonnes since February 2014.

The latest bust is the second for the Melbourne this month, following discovery of 151 kilograms of heroin aboard a fishing vessel off the east coast of Africa.
