Injured teen winched to safety after he was sucked into notorious blowhole on Sydney's northern beaches

A teenage boy has been winched to safety in a daring rescue mission after he was sucked into a notorious blowhole and submerged on Sydney's northern beaches.

Emergency services were called to the Warriewood blowhole about 1.15pm after a bystander heard screams for help and called Triple Zero.

The 14-year-old boy was playing near the rocky inner-tidal part of the blowhole when he was sucked in and submerged in a cave for about five minutes.

Daring rescuers scaled down a 20 metre cliff-face to reach the boy, who was stuck on the rocks below, unable to walk due to his injuries.

"Initially we were concerned about his location the tide. They were able to relocate him to a safer spot away from the tide and the swell and that gave us time to set up the rescue ," Fire and Rescue NSW's Michael Kennedy said.

The boy suffered multiple abrasions, including a fractured leg, deep laceration to his right leg and a head injury.

He was stabilised on a stretcher and safely winched to the top of the cliff after three hours, where his family and an ambulance were waiting to transport him to hospital.

He was taken to Sydney Children's Hospital in a stable condition.
