Wannabe NRL star runs through brick wall

Rugby league coaches are always asking their forwards to run through brick walls for the team in one of sport's great analogies.

And now a budding NRL player has taken the age old call literally – by building a brick wall and crashing through it.

Blacktown footballer David Andjelz is among hundreds of hopefuls seeking a spot on a new reality TV show on Channel Nine, called The Rookie, which aims to unearth a potential NRL star.

Nominations for the show close on May 13, prompting Andjelz to post his audition tape on his Facebook page.

Andjelz says the video was is about showing his passion and commitment.

"It's all about showing what's here that counts," he says pointing to his chest.

"And it's what's up here," he add, pointing to his head. "Your mentality that counts. If you lift weights, you make no breaks."

The hard-running forward has already received plenty of encouragement, including an accolade from former Kangaroos, Maroons and Broncos star Gorden Tallis.

The video, which shows Andjelz charging at full speed into and through a 1.7m wall, has also gone viral in the US with viewers stunned by his lack of self-preservation.

However, some local viewers have also taken a shot at Andjelz, suggesting that breaking through an uncemented wall was child's play.

The program, run by The Footy Show, will see contestants mentored and given challenges under the guidance of former NRL stars such as Anthony Minichiello and Petero Civoniceva with the winner offered a contract with a National Rugby League club.
