Wallaby David Pocock spends off-season training with anti-poaching scouts

Just a month after contesting the World Cup final, Wallaby David Pocock has spent part of his off-season training in Zimbabwe with an anti-poaching group.

Pocock, who was Australia’s player of the tournament, was back in his native Zimbabwe where he was invited to train with the Malilangwe Scouts.

The Malilangwe Trust is a not-for-profit organisation focussed on wildlife conservation in Zimbabwe, with its Scouts responsible for protecting wildlife from poachers in the region.

Pocock left Zimbabwe with his family for Australia via South Africa in 2002.

He has often publicly voiced opinion on various causes, including the environment.

A protest in 2014 resulted in Pocock being charged with hindering the working of mining equipment, after he and seven others chained themselves to digging equipment at a NSW coal mining site.

He avoided conviction over the protest.

Pocock isn’t due back with the ACT Brumbies until January 4 but it looks as though he’ll be returning in peak physical condition.

The Scouts’ training regime appears to be an effective way to prepare for the rigours of Test rugby, with the conservationists looking pretty impressive next to Pocock’s 104kg rig.
