'Walk Together' initiative takes over Australian streets

People across Australia have embraced a call to action to demonstrate their acceptance of refugees.
The Walk Together rallies, organised by advocacy group Welcome to Australia, took place in more than 20 towns and cities today.
Singer-songwriter Missy Higgins, Mariam Veiszadeh, MP Anne Aly and The Wiggles are among the organisation’s ambassadors.
Higgins performed at the Walk Together Melbourne event at Parliament House.
Welcome to Australia CEO Mohammad Al-Khafaji told the ABC the walks had gone global, with a community in Alaska following suit with their own declaration of support.
The marches took place just days after the release of an Amnesty International report that held the Australian government responsible for “deliberate” abuse and harm to asylum seekers on Nauru.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull slammed the report’s accusations as “absolutely false”.

Hundreds joined the Walk Together rally in Adelaide’s CBD, and marched from the Torrens Parade Grounds to Elder Park.
In Brisbane, the rally started at Kurilpa Park and proceeded to Emma Miller Place, while Canberrans marched around Lake Burley Griffin.
