Waleed Aly’s wife explains why she bought flowers for herself

It might be Valentine's Day, but Waleed Aly’s wife Susan Carland has taken to social media to explain why she doesn’t expect gifts from her husband.

Ms Carland posted a bunch of colourful blooms on her Instagram page yesterday, along with the caption: “Dear Me, Love Me”.

The image quickly attracted a number of negative comments, with some of her followers insisting that husband and prominent journalist Aly should have bought the flowers.

This morning, Ms Carland addressed the criticism in a video in which she insisted women buy themselves what they want.

“If my husband or anyone else got me flowers, that would be great, but I'm not going to wait around for someone to get me what I want, especially if it's just a cheap bunch of flowers”.

“I love flowers, like, I want a new bunch three times a week, but it will be very difficult for anyone to keep up with that.”

The academic and feminist went on to explain that she does “not expect” Aly to shower her with gifts.

“It’s great if he wants to, but I’m not going to outsource him”.

Ms Carland has since deleted the post.

Aly and Ms Carland married in 2002, and have two children.
