There will be one less axing ABC boss Mark Scott will have to worry about after Radio National drive Waleed Aly resigned.

Mr Aly, who also appears on the Network Ten show The Project, announced on Facebook he'll be leaving his job as Radio National drive host at the end of the year.

He said he had made the decision to leave and it was not a redundancy.

His announcement will mean one less person Mr Scott will have to cull from the ABC staff following a five per cent reduction in federal government funding.

Mr Scott has already signalled major changes, including making 400 jobs redundant to help offset $254 million in lost federal government funding over the next five years.

Mr Aly is the second high profile ABC identity to leave.

Walkley award-winning journalist Quentin Dempster, who hosted 7.30 in NSW, has said he will leave on Friday after being told he had no future with the national broadcaster.
