Zoo poo for Perth gardens

Perth Zoo's animals produce half a tonne of poo a day - leaving staff with the unique challenge of figuring out where to put it - and they've decided our backyards are a good place to start.

West Australian gardeners can now spread elephant, rhino and lion dung over their roses as Perth Zoo begins selling exotic manure, rather than sending it to landfill.

Sustainability coordinator Daniel Baker said burying organic material such as manure in landfill produced large volumes of methane.

Mr Baker said staff had been using animal manure, mixed with green waste, on the zoo's gardens for years.

"This product has helped us divert 500 tonnes of organic waste from landfill in the past 12 months," he said.

"We'd particularly like to thank our elephants who are jumbo contributors to the Creature Compost."
