Yachtsman dies off WA Pilbara coast

A 69-year-old man has died after falling from a yacht in waters off Western Australia's Pilbara region.

The man was with his wife when he fell from the vessel, which was anchored off Eaglehawk Island off the Dampier Archipelago, about 6.30pm on Thursday.

He sustained severe head injuries and is believed to have hit his head on the yacht.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and it is understood CPR was not attempted.

Karratha Police acting senior sergeant Paul Brown said the cause of death was not known, but it was not being treated as suspicious, and a report would be prepared for the coroner.

"It was just an unfortunate, untimely death," Sen Sgt Brown told AAP.

He said the couple were not believed to be locals and the man's wife was distraught.

Weather conditions were favourable and were not believed to have contributed to the accident, Sen Sgt Brown said.
