Wife appeals against manslaughter

A Geraldton doctor sentenced to jail for killing her husband will launch an appeal, her lawyer says.

Chamari Rasika Denuwanthe Gunathilaka Liyanage, 34, had pleaded not guilty to murder but was sentenced to a maximum four years after a Supreme Court jury on Monday convicted her of the lesser charge of the manslaughter of her husband Dinedra Athukorala in 2014.

She will be eligible for parole in as little as four months considering time already spent in jail.

Her lawyer, George Guidice, has told ABC radio he had been "given instructions to appeal against the decision of manslaughter", and that he will dedicate the next few weeks to getting a case together.

Liyanage also feared being deported after she is released from prison, Mr Guidice said.

"The story goes that once she's released they'll deport her immediately, that's what she believes to be the situation," he said.

"She's dealing with the embassy, trying to find out what her predicament is in relation to her residential status once she is released on parole."
