What we know about the Canning candidates

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE CANNING CANDIDATES:

Matt Keogh (ALP):

* Grew up in Armadale and Kelmscott in the Canning electorate

* Is a dispute resolution lawyer with Herbert Smith Freehills

* Former president of the Law Society of WA

* Parents work in health and education

* Has previously been a youth group leader, a volunteer at St John Ambulance and a board member of a group that runs refuges for victims of domestic violence.

Andrew Hastie (Liberals):

* Born in Wangaratta, Victoria but spent much of his life in NSW

* Father started a church from scratch in 1980 and spent a lot of his youth travelling with him around the vast parish, which fell within the federal seat of Indi

* Afghanistan war veteran who led missions against the Taliban. Also fought Daesh (IS)

* Joined the military in 2001 after the September 11 terrorist attacks and was appalled when his own generation blamed the US. Moved to WA in 2010 for SAS training

* Advised the federal government on Operation Sovereign Borders.
