Man charged over string of New Year's Day fires in Perth

A man has been charged after allegedly lighting a string of fires in Perth on New Year's Day.

An hour after the clock struck midnight, the man allegedly begun deliberately igniting fires along Canning River at Riverton Drive North in Shelley.

He had allegedly lit seven separate blazes by 7am.

Firefighters spent the early morning on the scene, extinguishing the flames before they had a chance to spread.

Following police investigations, a 63-year-old man from Willyung has been charged with seven counts of wilfully lighting a fire that is fire likely to injure or damage.

He was refused bail to front court later today.

His offence carries a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment.
