Welfare concerns for WA crash mum

A Perth mother charged over a crash that killed her teenage daughter was only taken into custody because she was at a high risk of self-harm, a court has heard.

Janet Louise Kirby, 47, appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court on Monday via video link from the Franklin Centre, a closed ward of psychiatric hospital Graylands.

She was released from the hospital and allowed to return home on the condition she report to a mental health clinic.

Kirby was allegedly driving along Marmion Avenue in Merriwa on March 14 when she lost control of her car and crashed, causing her 15-year-old daughter to be thrown from the vehicle.

The teen was taken to Joondalup Health Campus but died a short time later.

Police said there were seven occupants in the car, including two adults and five children.

All others in the car received minor injuries, including a 20-year-old woman who suffered a fractured arm.

The court heard Kirby has been under constant supervision since the accident because she was at risk of self-harm and doctors were now "cautiously optimistic" about her safety.

Her defence lawyer said Kirby's extended family, who sat in the back of the court, had flown from the UK to support her.

"She needs to be with her family," the lawyer said.

Kirby is scheduled to appear in court again for a mention only in May.
