Warning over possible laptop scam in WA

Door-knockers may be falsely promising free laptops while signing people up for courses in regional Western Australia, Consumer Protection says.

Low-income earners have been targeted, believing they are dealing with someone associated with the government and giving secure personal information without receiving paperwork, making it difficult to ascertain if they represent a training provider or are scammers.

"Because we're unclear whether these men are from a legitimate organisation, we would urge people not to give secure personal details such as tax file numbers or copies of driver's licences, birth certificates, passports or even utility bills," Acting Commissioner David Hillyard said.
