Woman fined after selling fake ultrasound images to expectant mothers

A West Australian woman who charged expectant mothers for ultrasound images of someone else's unborn baby has been fined $6,000.

Rawinia Hayes was to face a three-day trial in the Bunbury Magistrates Court, but pleaded guilty on Tuesday to six counts of accepting payment but failing to deliver goods.

Consumer Protection withdrew six counts of making false or misleading representations, which meant the matter could immediately proceed to sentencing.

Hayes admitted that she had supplied ultrasound images to six consumers that were not images of their babies, but denied her actions were intentionally misleading.

She was fined $6000 and ordered to pay costs of $3411.

The consumer watchdog launched an investigation into Hayes' Amazing 4D Imaging business after it received 77 complaints in one month.

Dozens of women also flocked to social media to complain about the business.

Commissioner for Consumer Protection Anne Driscoll said it had been a very emotional time for the women involved in the case as well as many other complainants who decided not to take part in the prosecution action.

"These women put their trust in Ms Hayes to capture a special moment in their lives that cannot now be replicated, and that trust was betrayed through negligence," Ms Driscoll said.

Hayes is not currently in business, Consumer Protection says.
