Veteran harness racing trainer critically injured in race

A veteran WA harness racing trainer and reinsman has been critically injured during a race at Gloucester Park.

72-year-old Tony Ciuppa was driving his horse Guns with Cows in the 4th race last night when it appears he suffered a heart attack and fell from his cart.

Witnesses say he was then trampled by other horses.

Paramedics performed CPR on him before rushing him to Royal Perth Hospital in a critical condition.

His condition has improved slightly today - he is now listed at critical but stable.

Races were postponed last night but resumed shortly after the incident.
