WA union criticises premier over weapons

The West Australian premier has angered the police union after saying he does not want to see armed officers in court, but there may be circumstances when it is necessary.

Colin Barnett said the state government took the issue of safety and security in courts very seriously, but he would prefer not to have police carrying guns and tasers in court.

"There may be particular trials, particular individuals where a heightened level security is required - terrorist acts, bikie gangs - those would be examples," he told parliament on Thursday.

"That is a matter for the minister of police and the chief justice, and I will always as premier take their advice."

The WA Police Union said it was "very disappointed" with the premier's comments, immediately tweeting: "I'm sure you would want police to be #ArmedInCourts @ColinBarnett if something happened around you!"
