A 19-year-old man has been charged over a road rage incident in which he is accused of terrorising a family by swerving in front of their car and forcing them to stop, assaulting a father and smashing their windscreen.

The family say they noticed the man was driving a red Commodore recklessly and doing burnouts on West Coast Highway near Floreat Beach on February 21 and the father took a photo while his wife drove.

The car was one in a group of about six driving dangerously.

When he noticed his picture being taken, the enraged man allegedly began tailgating the family's Honda.

He then swerved in front of the car, forcing it to stop.

He allegedly got out, jumped onto the bonnet and windscreen, shattering it and covering the man and woman and their two children in glass.

The father got out of the Honda and was confronted by the driver of the Commodore who yelled at him before pushing him in the chest causing him to stumble backwards, allege police.

A Coogee man has been charged with criminal damage, assault, disorderly behaviour and reckless driving, and is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on May 13.
