WA siege victim feared he was going to die

The victim of a 12-hour hostage crisis in Western Australia's southwest says he thought he was going to die.

The stand-off ended as dawn broke on Friday when psychiatric hospital escapee David Charles Batty, 53, was shot twice with bean bag rounds and arrested in a central Bunbury park.

It quickly became apparent Batty was the same man who in 2012 had held his then 79-year-old father hostage in a car and threatened police with a gas bottle and lighter for more than four hours in Perth's Kings Park.

His victim last week, Peter Williams, a local laundromat owner who suffered hypothermia in the wake of the overnight ordeal, fought back tears on Tuesday when he recounted how he'd felt.

Mr Williams said he was very concerned he wouldn't see his family again.

"And it was just so imperative that I try to survive this," Mr Williams said.

"It seemed like it was inevitable that I was going to die."

Batty will face the District Court of WA on Thursday.
