WA's Heirisson Island stand-off continues

Campfires will continue to burn at Perth's Heirisson Island with a handful of people protesting against the closure of indigenous communities refusing to leave.

City rangers escorted by police pulled down more tents on Thursday, the latest decamping in a string of attempts to move the group on.

Aboriginal elder Bella Bropho told AAP the group had no plans to leave Matagarup, the Swan River island's indigenous name, and would continue to defy the council's demand.

Ms Bropho said Matagarup was a traditional birthing ground for the Noongah people and the protesters were seeking advice about launching a legal claim to the island.

City of Perth chief executive Gary Stevenson said the current group were the third group of people to camp at the island since March and the issues they protested about had also varied.

Mr Stevenson said the closure of indigenous communities had nothing to do with local government and the City's obligation was to manage the reserve.

The council has had to barricade the island's vehicle access to stop people driving on the grass, which is near a playground, and close the public toilets because the septic tanks can't cope.

"Each time we place a lock, the lock is being broken," Mr Stevenson said.

Over the past four months, rangers have also removed items including washing machines and wardrobes.

Mr Stevenson said the council would continue to remove tents from the area but urged the group to leave voluntarily and engage in long-term strategies to recognise the island's cultural significance.

"Camping is not the solution," he told AAP.

Weeks of heated protests were held on Heirisson Island in 2012 after a group of Aboriginal activists objected to the WA government's $1.3 billion native title offer to the Noongah people.
