WA's CCC records larger work load

Western Australia's corruption watchdog has recorded an increase in allegations it receives about misconduct by public officers, plus a 100 per cent conviction rate, its annual report shows.

The Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) assessed 7260 allegations of misconduct and reviewable police action in 2013/14, compared with 6148 the previous year.

The complaints ranged from minor misconduct, such as verbal abuse, to criminal offences, such as stealing and fraud.

The CCC's 2013/14 annual report shows 17 people were convicted of 97 criminal offences during the year after CCC investigations.

The report, tabled in state parliament on Friday, also noted the difficulty of not having a permanent commissioner despite former boss Roger Macknay QC giving five months notice of his intention to retire in April this year.

"This extended interregnum is disruptive to the work of the commission and is very challenging for the acting commissioners who have other professional responsibilities," it said.

The CCC also ordered the Department of Corrective Services (DCS) this past year to notify them of all positive prisoner drug tests, contraband in cells, unexplained assaults and unauthorised access to information.

It resulted in 1761 notifications relating to the DCS being assessed by the CCC in 2013/14, compared with 610 the previous year.
