WA Premier Colin Barnett still confident of change to GST

West Australian Premier Colin Barnett remains confident the GST will change, despite the prime minister stating his government has no plans to do so.

Tony Abbott told the National Press Club on Monday that the GST would not change this term or next unless it was supported by all the states and territories.

Mr Barnett said while he hadn't heard the speech, he was confident the GST would be altered because the big four states agreed it was broken.

And despite the ousting of GST-change ally Campbell Newman at Saturday's state election, Queensland would still support the move because it was next in line to be hit hard by the tax's carve up.

WA opposition leader Mark McGowan said the Liberal National Party's agenda to privatise Queensland was the same as Mr Barnett's and the people would get him back.

"Campbell Newman was arrogant, out of touch and he broke promises and that's exactly the same as Colin Barnett," Mr McGowan said.

Mr Barnett said he was surprised at how many seats the LNP lost on the weekend but did not think it foreshadowed WA's 2017 election result.

"I don't expect the same reaction but it shows that people are very nervous, very sensitive to proposals to sell utilities," Mr Barnett said.

"That is not proposed and that will not happen in WA."
