WA premier says PM is not avoiding him

The West Australian premier has dismissed suggestions Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is avoiding him and his unpopular state government while campaigning in Perth.

Colin Barnett told reporters on Tuesday that voters had the ability to distinguish between federal and state politics, and the notion Mr Turnbull was avoiding him was unfounded.

"The public clearly distinguish between federal and state politics and I think, with due respect, discussion along that agenda is just misplaced. People know it's a federal election," Mr Barnett said.

Mr Turnbull, who arrived in Perth for his second visit of the election campaign on Monday night, is yet to appear publicly with Mr Barnett.

Opposition leader Mark McGowan goaded the premier in parliament, saying: "The prime minister doesn't want to be seen with you. He's too embarrassed".

"When a submarine goes deep, it's to escape detection - that's what the premier has done," Mr McGowan said.

"They've got him in cryogenic storage, Mr Speaker, to keep him away from the prime minister."

But both Liberal leaders will attend a campaign launch for member for Curtin and foreign minister Julie Bishop in Cottesloe, in Mr Barnett's state electorate, on Tuesday night.

Mr Turnbull described the premier as "a very good friend and a good Liberal colleague" on ABC radio earlier on Tuesday, saying he was looking forward to a photo opportunity with him.
