Sam Barnett says he has not spoken to his father, West Australian Premier Colin Barnett, since he was charged with property damage after a fight with his girlfriend on the Gold Coast.

The 26-year-old and his girlfriend Melissa Garbin will face court after the argument, which Mr Barnett said involved smashing each other's laptops and a mobile phone after Ms Garbin discovered text messages on his phone from another woman.

Police were called to their hotel room about 3am on Monday after yelling was heard and he spent an hour in a holding cell.

"Mum called me, I haven't spoken to dad, he is pretty busy," he told 6PR radio.

"Mum wasn't pleased at all, which is understandable.

"It was certainly a dumb thing to do, not a wise decision."

He denied alcohol was involved, saying he had given up drinking on new year's eve.

The events come after Sam Barnett decided not to pursue assault charges after saying he was assaulted at a Perth nightclub in December.

He also posted a photograph around the time showing deliberate scratches on his Porsche, which he said had caused $20,000 damage.
