Man arrested after 11-hour armed stand-off ends in WA town

A tense 11-hour stand-off has come to an end in in Western Australia's south-west, with the arrest of a man this morning.

Heavily armed police had surrounded a property at McKeown Place in Margaret River, where a gunman has been holed up inside a house since yesterday evening.

But this morning the siege ended when the man, aged in his 50s, surrendered to police.

He has been taken into custody by officers.

Nearby residents who had been told by police to evacuate are now being allowed to return to their homes.

Last night families, some of them with young children, had been told by police to go and find somewhere safe to stay.

Margaret River Police said the "active firearm" incident is over and the area is now safe.

Police were called to the incident yesterday evening when multiple gunshots were reported.

Officers from the heavily armed Tactical Response Group attended and negotiations started with the gunman.

They continued through the night until this morning.
