Uproar as WA pair convicted of murder

The family of a Perth murder victim say their hearts will always be broken, while the father of one of the killers had to be ejected from court after the verdict was handed down.

Ben Michael Mansfield and Daniel Michael Marchesano were convicted on Thursday in the West Australian Supreme Court of murdering fellow methylamphetamine user Michael Pruiti in October 2013.

Marchesano lured Mr Pruiti, 31, to isolated bushland where Mansfield shot him in the head.

Mr Pruiti's body was then dismembered, set alight and buried in Perth's Hills region.

Jury members wept as the verdict was read out, while the victim's supporters cheered and sighed with relief, with one woman saying: "It's over."

Another supporter of the victim shouted: "Burn in hell, you maggots!"

That man was quickly removed from court.

Marchesano's father then lashed out at the jury, shouting: "My son never murdered no c***!"

He then threatened to go after the "dog" who called his son a "maggot", as Marchesano pleaded from the dock for his father to settle down.

Detectives and security staff had to restrain the man and removed him from the courtroom.

"Don't hurt me! I'll report you!" he shouted as he left the room.

Outside court, Mr Pruiti's sister, Gabrielle, thanked everyone involved in the prosecution case and the community support.

"With the verdict delivered, we are now able to close the door on this chapter," she said.

"We will begin to pick up the pieces and attempt to move forward with our lives.

"Our hearts will always be broken because Michael was taken from us too soon.

"We've lost our beautiful Michael but we are glad that he has just received the justice he's deserved."

Marchesano's lawyer Philip Urquhart had argued during the trial that his client, who was aged 18 at the time, had participated after Mansfield, who is 15 years older, threatened to murder Marchesano's mother and younger sister.

But Mansfield's lawyer David Edwardson argued Marchesano was using his client as a scapegoat, changing his version of events during a long police interview after detectives divulged information that implicated him.

Christian Luke Gilmore pleaded guilty last year to being an accessory, admitting he helped dispose of Mr Pruiti's body and the gun.

Gilmore was sentenced to two-and-a-half years behind bars and has now served his sentence.

Mansfield and Marchesano will face a sentencing hearing on November 18.
