WA Murdoch Uni's suspended VC quits

Murdoch University's suspended Vice Chancellor Professor Richard Higgott has resigned from his position at the university, and from academic administration.

The 65-year-old has been suspended on full pay since last month when the university referred him to the West Australian Corruption and Crime Commission following an internal investigation.

"Professor Higgott's vision and leadership in refocusing Murdoch into a globally recognised research-led university is a legacy for which he will be justifiably recognised," Murdoch Chancellor David Flanagan said, announcing Professor Higgott's resignation on Friday.

Professor Andrew Taggart will continue in the Acting Vice Chancellor role.

Mr Flanagan said the university had faced a difficult time and would continue to face a period of change.

"Over the next few years, Murdoch is going to go through a period of change and development that will present plenty of challenges along the way," he said.

"But as a Senate we are convinced that this successful transition represents the best chance of achieving the professional and academic recognition and financial strength that Murdoch deserves."

Mr Flanagan also announced that former University of Western Australia Senior Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Bill Louden will join Murdoch University.
