WA motorists to get towing fines back

Perth drivers who parked illegally in CBD clearways during the coronavirus pandemic will have towing fees reimbursed, costing the state government about $200,000.

The government will return the payments after fines were imposed amid confusion over a moratorium on towing fees and the introduction of free on-street parking at the end of March.

However, it says that moratorium will be lifted from Monday.

"The City of Perth introduced free on-street parking in the CBD due to lower traffic volumes in the city brought on by COVID-19 restrictions," Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.

"This created a lot of confusion among some drivers who wrongly assumed this free parking extended to clearways."

Ms Saffioti said Perth traffic volumes had also returned to about 80 per cent of pre-pandemic levels after falling to about 50 per cent last month.

She said with more people returning to work, the CBD clearway rules would be strictly enforced.
