A West Australian man who fatally tortured a 10-month-old baby, inflicting broken bones, burns and bruises, is due to be sentenced.

Mervyn Kenneth Douglas Bell was convicted in September in the WA Supreme Court of sexually assaulting and murdering the boy.

Justice John McKechnie commented at the time that it was one of the most evil cases he had encountered.

The court heard the 27-year-old wanted payback for the child's mother humiliating him, so he took the boy from Broome in March last year and drove almost 1000 kilometres on a very hot day.

He eventually took the injured boy to the Fortescue Roadhouse near Karratha - but it was too late.

Bell could be jailed indefinitely, pending the results of psychological and psychiatric reports.
