A man who participated in a home invasion in which two people were doused in petrol and threatened to be set alight has been jailed.

Joshua Kevin Kohlberger, 32, pleaded guilty in the District Court on Thursday to breaking into a Highgate home in Perth's north and assaulting a man and a woman on December 4, 2013.

The court heard Kohlberger lacks judgment and was easily influenced because of his low-range intellectual capacity.

His addiction to drugs, including methamphetamine and heroin, also compromised his mental health and played a significant role in his extensive history of criminal offending.

Judge Mark Herron said Kohlberger had shown remorse for his actions but an immediate term of imprisonment was the only appropriate punishment for such a serious offence.

Kohlberger was sentenced to three years and 10 months in jail.

With time served, he will be eligible for parole in just over a year.
