A WA man has been charged for allegedly attacking a truck driver with a hammer at a petrol station and later punching a police officer in the face.

Police say the 44-year-old tried to steal fuel from a Meekatharra service station, in the state's Mid West region, on Wednesday morning and argued with a staff member, then drove away.

He later returned armed with a hammer and smashed his way into the toilet, injuring an innocent truck driver.

The man was later arrested and taken to the Mount Magnet police station where he allegedly punched a policeman in the face.

The man, who is from the Perth suburb of Como, was charged with grievous bodily harm, stealing and assaulting a public officer.
