WA man begs thieves to return war medals

The grandson of an army veteran is pleading with thieves who stole war medals from his Perth home to return them before Anzac Day.

Steven Harry Pugh says the medals belonged to his grandfather and namesake, Harry Stephen Pugh, who was wounded in Gallipoli in 1915.

"Please find it in your heart to return the medals before Anzac Day," he told AAP on Tuesday.

"They've been worn each year ... I hope to take them to Anzac Cove one year."

Mr Pugh said he has had the three medals - a 1914-1915 Star, a British War Medal and a Victory Medal - for about 30 years.

He returned to his Tuart Hill home on Monday morning last week to find thieves jumping over his fence, taking with them loot including the medals, a laptop computer, bottles of specialist whiskey and rare coins.

"I can get replicas made, but grandpa wore these," he said.

He said his grandfather suffered a shrapnel injury when landing at Gallipoli, and died in Australia in the early 1940s.

Mr Pugh was scheduled to tell his grandfather's story at a Rotary event in Perth next Monday, and had been planning to take the medals with him.
