WA life bans for live-baiting greyhounds

West Australians caught live-baiting greyhounds will be banned from the industry for life under tough new penalties.

They will also be banned from setting foot on a racetrack or placing a bet for at least 10 years and be fined $50,000, Racing and Wagering WA said on Friday.

Racing and Gaming Minister Colin Holt welcomed the hard-line approach to anyone found guilty of live-baiting.

The changes also mean if live-baiting happens on a track, its management might be sacked.

"You won't own, you won't train, you won't touch the dogs ever again," Mr Holt said.

Greyhound racing's major sponsors are deserting the sport after shocking live-baiting revelations were aired on ABC TV.

On Monday, the Four Corners program showed secret footage of some of Australia's most prominent greyhound trainers using live animals - including piglets, rabbits and possums - to "blood" dogs.

Mr Holt said no evidence has been presented that live-baiting was occurring in WA.
