WA Liberal MP has car stolen while hanging election signs

A Western Australian Liberal MP's car was allegedly stolen and used in a ram raid at a bottle shop on the eve of when early polls opened for the state election.

North West Central MP Merome Beard was hanging up corflutes while her car was parked on Robinson Street in Carnarvon, about 900km north of Perth, about 11.30pm on Sunday when she was confronted.

"I was putting some things back into the car and getting into the car. I had everything in the car and I was [allegedly] confronted by three people in the car with me," she told 9news.com.au.

Beard hopped out of the car and it drove off, leaving her stranded.

"You feel very vulnerable and I didn't have anything with me," she said.

"Everything was in the car, my mobile phone, I was just getting into the car so I had everything in the car, and I didn't have any way of making a call.

"So I walked up to the motel and there was a man who kind of helped me there and I made a call to the police and my husband to come pick me up and I, of course, was worried because polling started at eight o'clock the next morning and everything I needed was in the car."

Later that same night, police alleged her car rammed through secure doors to a bottle shop and caused extensive damage.

Various items were allegedly stolen from the premises.

Police found the car, a Toyota Landcruiser, abandoned in bushland in Grey Plains with the alleged offenders missing.

This morning, police arrested and charged three boys — aged 12, 15 and 16 — with several offences including stealing a motor vehicle.

The youngest boy was bailed to face the Carnarvon Children's Court on March 11 and the two others will face the same court later today.

Beard said the alleged incident highlighted a serious youth crime issue that she hoped to tackle if re-elected in the election.

Early voting opened yesterday with election day to be held on Saturday, March 8.
