WA Labor wants pollution app and website

A website and mobile application are needed to alert West Australians in real time about pollution in beaches and rivers, the state opposition says.

Labor says WA waters have been severely polluted more than once a week between July 2011 and November 2014, putting swimmers at risk of illnesses such as gastroenteritis and ear and eye infections.

The information, revealed by a parliamentary committee, shows dangerous levels of faecal coliform organisms 234 times during that period.

Opposition spokesman Chris Tallentire says the Swan and Canning rivers are also being polluted by heavy metals and sewage spills.

"Forcing swimmers to rely on signs that are unlikely to be seen is just not good enough," he said.

"They need to be completely aware of potential health risks they face."
