WA govt gives $10m for new Eagles nest

A $10 million state government commitment to redevelop Lathlain Park, which will include a new training home for the West Coast Eagles, is an "investment for 100 years", the club says.

West Coast Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett said the park would also provide a base for the Wirrpanda Foundation, which aimed to improve the quality of life for Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders.

"We think this is going to transform this area and give us the opportunity to work with the community over a long period of time," he told reporters on Friday.

"The Wirrpanda Foundation have been nomadic for 11 years, they really haven't had a base and they're going to have a permanent base at Lathlain Park, and they're thrilled with the opportunity that they're going to receive."

The funding over four years, which was announced in the state budget on Thursday, will go towards public facilities including an extra oval and rebuilding the existing oval, lighting, a scoreboard, a two-lane running track, tennis courts and a playground.

The Eagles will fund their own facilities.

Premier Colin Barnett said the state government money for the Town of Victoria Park matched the Commonwealth's commitment.

He denied it was a misuse of funds given the record debt and deficit revealed in the state budget.

The state government has also provided funding to the City of Cockburn for community aspects of the Cockburn Aquatic and Recreation Facility, which will also become the new training facility and headquarters for the Fremantle Dockers.

Construction at Lathlain Park is expected to start at the end of this year's WAFL season.
