Cold water spurs WA govt budget reveal

Ongoing problems with the Perth Quadriplegic Centre's water system have spurred the state government into an early budget announcement.

Health Minister John Day said on Monday afternoon $500,000 would be allocated in this week's budget for a committee to tackle plans for the improvement of the ageing quadriplegic centre.

The committee will be chaired by Professor Bryant Stokes and will include representatives from the Department of Housing and the Disability Services Commission.

On Monday morning it emerged patients at the centre had not had access to hot water for several days, with the state opposition calling on the government to take immediate action.

Opposition Leader Mark McGowan said a person had also been scalded at the centre last year.

"We can't have a situation where people who are quadriplegic are having cold showers or are getting scalded," he told reporters on Monday.

A problem with the facility's gas firing system has prevented adequate water heating at the facility.

Mr Day said installation of replacement parts in the piping network would happen within the next few days.

"The gas firing system for the boilers has been repaired and the centre is managing shower schedules to enable the water to heat adequately for clients," Mr Day said in a statement.

Mr Day said he expected an update from the new committee by the end of the year, which would contain recommendations on the construction of a new centre and implementation of a new model of care.

The new model of care would include more in-home options for people with spinal cord injuries.
