WA footballer Garlett charged after filming himself at 200km/h

Shocking video has emerged of failed AFL recruit Dayle Garlett hooning at 200km/h on a Western Australia highway.

The 20-year-old former Hawthorn Hawks recruit posted the video on his Facebook page yesterday, just hours before he was arrested for allegedly stealing a car and drug possession.

The video shows Garlett on his way to Geraldton when he finally hits 200km/h, before turning the camera on himself.

"I want to keep going but there's a f---king car in front of me," Garlett tells the camera.

"Guess this why (sic) the boys never want me to drive haha," the caption on the video read.

Police arrested the troubled footballer at about 5pm Monday on Brand Highway before he was charged with driving a stolen car, allegedly the silver Honda Accord in the video, and in possession of a small amount of drugs, reportedly methamphetamine.

Today his heartbroken family pleaded with the troubled footballer to get help before it's too late.

"(We) just want him to know that we love him and we care for him," sister Jennifer Garlett told 9NEWS.

"But my brother - you need to open your eyes and realise that our mother's hurting."

Earlier this month, Garlett admitted he'd turned to crime to feed a meth addiction that he developed while playing AFL in Melbourne. The confession meant he walked free from court on burglary charges.

His family says the punishment needs to be tougher – for him to change his ways.

Garlett was granted bail and is set to appear in court next month to face the charges.
