WA experiences baby boom

Western Australia is in the grip of a baby boom.

Attorney-General Michael Mischin says a record 35,595 births were registered in the state in 2014, 847 more than the previous year.

WA parents opted for traditional names that had been in and around the top five for the past few years, Mr Mischin said.

Oliver was the most popular name for boys in WA, swapping places with 2013's top name, Jack.

Biblical names such as Noah, Lucas, Thomas, James and Jacob featured in the top 10 names for males.

Emily was the favourite name for girls, followed by Ava, Charlotte and the previous year's top name, Olivia.

Contemporary names such as Jaxon, Kai, Chase and Jai were increasingly prevalent among the boys, while Ivy, Scarlett, Willow and Aria were more common for girls.

Mr Mischin said a small boost in the number of girls named Elsa could be attributed to animated Disney film Frozen, with 17 babies named after the lead character, up from three.

While names of characters from popular television shows and films such as Game of Thrones and The Hunger Games were big overseas, that trend had not reached WA, he said.
